Amy's End of the Summer Book Review

Part I

The best books I read this year, and why!

I'm going to kick off my end of summer book review by discussing one of my favorite reads of this summer. I had the pleasure of reading this novel as an ARC and it features one of my favorite book heroes and one of my favorite character struggles from this year's list.

My Name is A'yen is the beginning to a series of books detailing the search for freedom of a slave race called the Loks Me and in particular the struggles of a young man named A'yen. A'yen has suffered in his life, losing his first beloved owner and lover and spending time in a prison afterward. This story kicks off when A'yen is freed from that prison and becomes the property of a female archaeologist who is about to travel to the outer reaches of the galaxy in search of proof that an ancient civilization existed there. A'yen is to be her protector and companion on the journey.

There is so much to this story that I can't possibly tell everyone about everything that makes this book great. What I can tell you is that you will see the world through A'yen's eyes and follow him on a personal journey to find trust, and love, again. Woven throughout A'yen's story is the story of his people and what he will come to mean to them in the end.

I highly recommend this book to readers who love strong heroes and stories of overcoming grief and struggles to find happiness. A'yen's story is just beginning, and readers will be on the edges of their seats to continue the saga.

Biography

Rachel Leigh Smith writes romance for the hero lover. She lives in central Louisiana with her family and a half-crazed calico. When not writing, which isn't often, she's hanging with her family, doing counted cross-stitch, or yakking about life, the universe, and everything with her besties. There may also be Netflix binging . . .

She's an active member of the Science Fiction Romance Brigade and Romance Writers of America.

Autumn
I wasn’t looking for love. No, I had made a decision – one to help those that needed it; to try and save a life. I thought joining the pen pal program would be something to keep me distracted while I adjusted to my new life. I never thought I’d fall in love with a soldier…
Brock
I wasn’t looking for love. I had everything I needed; my platoon, my career, my focus. When it came to women, I got what I needed when I needed it- nothing more, nothing less. Until I received that first letter. She changed that, but as I walk down the aisle she still doesn’t know the secret I keep hidden. I never thought I’d fall in love with an angel. How can I bring her into my world?

Sometimes being gifted isn't all it's cracked up to be! APOCALYPTIC RECORDS by DJ Shaw

Welcome to Author DJ Shaw and her new novel

APOCALYPTIC RECORDS

(PS- I LOVE THIS COVER!!!)

Bianca Tailer had always dreamed of making it big. She’d been putting on concerts for friends and family for as long as she could remember. So when her friend, Stephanie Donovan, approached her about joining the college band, Bianca jumps at the chance, not only because her best friend is in the band as the drummer but also because it means giving herself the chance to live out her dreams. The four band members start rehearsing right away.
When the girls see a commercial about a Battle of the Bands that’s hosted by Apocalyptic Records’ own Johnny Apocalypse, they begin booking as many gigs around campus as they can to get in extra practice.
Not one of them ever thought that signing Nostradamuse to participate would change their lives. Though Bianca can’t help feeling that she should have known what was coming...

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1977, DJ Shaw was 17 before she was able to see most of the United States. When she was 17, she decided to join the fair, traveling with them to Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Once the fair arrived in Lake Charles, DJ had decided it was time to go home, that she had had enough of traveling with the fair. She much rather preferred to sit around writing, or even telling, the lives of the people who lived in her head. She had been good at story-telling from the time she was about ten, when she scared herself so bad with her story of the Boogey-man that she couldn’t move off her bed. Her siblings would come to her for their scare fix, because they knew she could come up with something on the spot.
Having found what she loved to do at an early age, she continued to write down her stories and any poetry that came into her head. She had stacks upon stacks of notebooks filled with her work. Her love of horror movies made her stories that much more chilling.
When she’s not writing, she’s listening to music, supporting her favorite adopted brother and his band “Traveler in Pain”, playing with her five children, spending time with her husband of seven years or watching horror movies in the middle of the night just for the scare factor.
